In Praise of Bias – video

–I agree. We should know what our own biases are.

A well written piece, and as always very well animated, from The School Of Life about bias that presents it not as a bad thing but as something everyone has, as part of life. It goes on to say that perhaps it’s time we understand our own biases and have society be more open about what biases they believe in, as institutions, etc..

So You Want To Be A Writer – by Charles Bukowski

So You Want To Be A Writer

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don’t do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it for money or
fame,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don’t do it.
if it’s hard work just thinking about doing it,
don’t do it.
if you’re trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.
if you have to wait for it to roar out of
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you’re not ready.

don’t be like so many writers,
don’t be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don’t be dull and boring and
pretentious, don’t be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don’t add to that.
don’t do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don’t do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don’t do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

American Graffiti [1973]

mels

We watched this movie yesterday as it’s part of the list I’m going through.

I like the way George Lucas tells the story, the continued action, the silliness of high school dreams, the silliness of the so called “adulthood”. The set, the cars, and the wardrobe are all spot on.

I was afraid it would get boring—with old movie slowness—but it didn’t. The 112 minutes go by in a flash of fast cars, horny teens, and ‘baby-boomer’ Americana.

Trailer:

Skeleton Tree (2016)

An image of a black background. In the bottom-left centre, monospace-style green text reads "Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds" in uppercase and "Skeleton Tree" in normal-case. Underneath is a static text cursor.

We were lucky enough to go see Nick Cave’s documentary ‘One More Time With Feeling’ on the 8th, as the album ‘Skeleton Tree‘ came out the next day.
It was a haunting movie. The album is tremendous.

If you want to read pretty things said about it go to the Guardian. If you want to read ugly things, go to the usual gutter at the end of the article where the sheep and the vultures always lie: the comments section.

Cuz I’m out of words.

Stranger Things [2016]

We’ve watched 5 out of the 8 episodes on Netflix and I think we’re pretty much sold. (Fingers crossed for the last 3 episodes.)

Winona Ryder does a very good job as the mother of a kid that goes missing and the acting in general is great.
It’s a series full of TV tropes from the 80s/90s but all seemingly done purposefully and with respect for the genre, if I can call it that.

Whimsical, mysterious, innocent, familiar but unexpected at times, the story is engaging and very well written. If you like thrillers with a little stirring of the most basic fears you might just like this one:

Side note, the intro is f*cking fenomenal:
