My sister got married Sunday. I’m so happy for her. It was a lovely wedding and Scott is a wonderful man.

His family is also wonderful. Lovely people. (Hello Fran!)

Fran, my sister’s future MIL, took us to a pub for dinner to indulge my UK cravings of bangers & mash. Unfortunately they didn’t serve it anymore but I had a marvelous fish and chips with mushy peas. Perfect!

What I miss about the UK – I

In no particular order:

- Free museums;

- The lack of bureaucracy in public departments;
- Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s (I haven’t eaten a single vegetable since…);

- Friends;

- My sister;

- Ready-made hummus;

- Costa cappuccino;
- Boots;

- Borders (alas, it’s closed all over the UK now…);
- Real tea every morning;
- The train to London;

- London;

- Mac, Milo and Midge (the sweet cats from next door: ♥, ♥, ♥!!);

- Pub grub;

- Wagamama’s Chille Ramen;

- TopShop;
- Camden;

- All that space for the cats;
- Having an oven;
- The efficient post office;
- Lawns that are suppose to be used.

What I don’t miss:

- The “Citi 5″ bus (Bar Hill > Cambridge > Bar Hill);

- Having absolutely nothing to do on weekends;
- Using the car;
- Being 11 pounds (US) – 5 kilos – fatter;
- The nanny state;
- The idiotic mail carriers.

Em nenhuma ordem particular:

- Museus grátis;
- A inexistência de burocracia nos serviços públicos;
- Os supermercados Tesco e Sainsbury’s (Nunca mais comi vegetais…);
- Amigos;
- A minha irmã;
- Hummus já feito;
- Cappuccinos da cadeia de cafés Costa;
- As farmácias Boots – têm tudo o que se possa imaginar;
- A livraria Borders (entretanto fechou em todo o Reino Unido);
- Chá a sério todas as manhãs;
- O comboio para Londres;
- Londres;
- O Mac, o Milo e o Midge (os gatarrões dos vizinhos do lado: ♥, ♥, ♥!!);
- Comida de pub;
- A malga gigante de sopa e massa chinesa picante do Wagamama;
- A loja de roupa TopShop;
- Os mercados de Camden;
- Todo aquele espaço onde os gatos podiam andar;
- Ter um forno;
- A eficiência dos correios;
- Relvados que se podem usar.

Do que não sinto falta:

- Do autocarro “Citi 5″ (Bar Hill > Cambridge > Bar Hill);
- De não haver nada de jeito para fazer aos fins de semana;
- De usar o carro;
- De ter mais 5 kilos;
- Do Estado ser como um paizinho;
- Dos carteiros idiotas.

Moving is not very glamorous. Mudar de casa não é muito glamoroso.

We moved all in a little car. The cats occupied a lot of space in the back seat but we still managed to pack most of my clothes and shoes. I realized that I have too many stuff.

Next time we move I’ll use Voovit, for sure.

A mudança foi toda feita no nosso pequeno carrinho. Os gatos ocupam muiio espaço nos bancos de trás mas conseguimos que coubesse a maioria da minha roupa e sapatos. Cheguei à conclusão que tenho coisas a mais.

Para a próxima é provável que usemos o Voovit.

On living in the UK III

5 things I dislike:

- The trash is collected only once every 15 days. If you miss that collection you are stuck with a bin full of trash and no room to put all of your new trash;

- The lack of care of the postman. I get postcards and photos on the mail and the postman always bends the envelopes. Gah!

- Some parts of the cities have hundreds of houses that look the same;

- The amount of crap we receive in the mailbox. Local newspaper, council newspaper, charity stuff, adds for everything, Avon catalogs, other catalogs and more… It fills the compost bin to the rim;

- Landlords have a thing with pets. If you have a pet it’s harder to get an apartment or a house. We tried to call lots of apartments and they all said “no pets”. Houses are easier because they don’t have the building comity making the rules. Some landlords also refuse to let to people with children, which makes me mad!

5 coisas que me desagradam:

- O lixo é recolhido de 15 em 15 dias. Temos um caixote para o lixo doméstico e um para o composto orgânico. Uma semana vêm recolher um dos caixotes e na outra o outro. Se falharmos a recolha do lixo ficamos com um caixote cheio de lixo mais 15 dias e nenhum lugar para por o lixo novo;

- A falta de cuidado do carteiro. Recebo muitas fotografias e postais no correio e o carteiro faz questão de dobrar os envelopes. Gah!

- Todas as cidades têm áreas gigantescas de casas iguais;

- A quantidade de lixarada que nos enfiam pela ranhura do correio. São jornais da autarquia, jornalecos da aldeia local, pedidos de caridade, anúncios para tudo e mais alguma coisa, catálogos da Avon e de outras coisas que tal e muito mais… Enchemos o caixote de composto até a cima com papelada;

- Os senhorios têm problemas com animais de estimação. Se temos animais é muito mais difícil alugar uma casa. Em particular apartamentos, por causa do condomínio. Alguns senhorios também recusam o aluguer a pessoas com crianças o que me deixa fula!
